Founder, Guitar Instructor – Play On Play Music



With over 23 years of teaching experience and a deep-rooted passion for music education, Kenton McAlister brings both expertise and artistry to every lesson. A graduate of post-secondary music studies with a focus on guitar at Vancouver Community College and then Vancouver Island University, Kenton combines academic training with real-world experience to offer students a well-rounded and practical approach to learning.

As a seasoned performer and songwriter, Kenton has released three self-produced albums and toured extensively across Canada from 2002 to 2010. During that time, he headlined major festivals throughout British Columbia and Alberta and sold out shows in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto. His musical journey has also seen him share stages with iconic acts, including Rosanne Cash, The Tennessee Three (Johnny Cash’s original band), and multiple dates with Canadian Country Music icon Corb Lund.

At Play On Play Music, Kenton takes a goal-oriented approach to teaching. Each lesson is thoughtfully structured to include the fundamentals of reading music for guitar, alongside hands-on song learning that keeps students engaged and motivated. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, Kenton’s personalized instruction helps students progress with confidence, creativity, and enjoyment.
