Frequently asked questions

Students should have the following at each lesson: 

• a pencil for marking music and taking notes
• guitar picks
• all materials including sheet music and guitar books
• a can-do attitude and a preparation to laugh while we learn!

Yes, students are encouraged to bring their own guitar. You can email [email protected] for a list of recommended beginner guitars that are of a good quality, but won't break the bank.

I welcome students aged 6 to 106!  However, it is strongly reccomended that students start guitar no earlier than 7 years old. Students aged 6 and 7 are encouraged to start lessons on the Ukulele. This is a matter of not only having the proper dexterity and motor skills developed, but a half-hour lesson is a long time to keep focused for the little ones!

Each guitar lesson at Play On Play lasts 30 minutes, providing ample time for instruction and practice with an experienced teacher. More advanced students are encouraged to consider 45 minute or 60 minute lessons. 

Ideally and time permitting, practicing the assigned music and techniques for half an hour a day for five days each week will get you playing well and progressing fast. Realistically, committing to fifteen minutes per day for five days a week should be the minimum. I strongly encourage my students to take their instrument seriously and approach it with respect and goals. I fully understand homework and activities can get busy for those in school, and life obligations can get busy for adult students. I highly encourage parents to check-in for a sixty second recap of students' lesson and progress. I have seen consistent improvement and success in students when this is a regular occurrence!
